This year's graduate show was quite the event! As you can see from these few shots I took on the night for memories sake. It was a great opening and I feel quite privileged to have had the opportunity to display my work in the SASA Gallery, which is a truly fantastic gallery in Adelaide.
Also to exhibit my work alongside some amazingly talented artists who I am sure are going onto great things in the future.

Its on til the 14th!

Installation View

Ok, it's all over. I'm beginning to recover from one hectic and stressful year!

This is my final selected works, a culmination of visual and theoretical research, experimentation and many hours searching for what it is that drives my artwork.

It's called " Once Upon a Horror" ; a visual exploration of symbolism and the unconscious in classic European fairy tales.

The title is more of a pun, there's no real horror, just an underlying anxiety and disquiet like a buzzing in your ears. The oil paintings kind of play around with traditional portraiture and the watercolours draw on story book illustration from my childhood.

The picture quality is not the best but I intend to upload some better quality pics in the coming weeks.

2011; what a crazy year.

Love Me, Leave Me

So happy to be a part of this lovely exhibition which should be amazing, I dont know all the ladies here but the ones I do know are some of the most talented artists I have met :)
The show is curated by the delightful Fruzsi Kenez so it should be an amazing night and I have 3 small works in for sale, watercolours and oil paint, so whip out your purses and give me your pennies! Tehe!

These are a few of my small watercolours I've done this year.
Compared to my oil paintings they have a more quiet, intimate quality which I really like. They operate in a different way; whereas the paintings are perhaps more immediate, these have a subtle presence which makes you come closer yet might push you away at the same time. I think this quietness can make them look 'pretty' or something (watercolours by their very nature have a really pretty quality I believe anyways) and I like to undermine this with my subject matter which is often dead animals, disembodied heads and skulls.

So I have not updated this blog in a while, yet I hope to rectify this situation and include some of my influences as well as more recent work n the future, after holidays.
ANYHOO, The lovely people at Red Opus invited me back to be a part of their last group show held at the gallery unfortunately, though they are going to continue with online exhibitions and other jazz :)

Now, I wouldn't claim to have a ' brilliant mind' but I think some of the people in the show probably do! So I'll leave that alone, but it should be a lovely exhibition and well SALA time is always a good time :)

Student Show!

I'm in a student show at this cute space in St. Peters called Red Opus :)
I know a few of the artists and I can easily say that they are extremely talented people,
So everyone should come and see it!
Also I have some of my relatives over from South Africa so its even more exciting as I get to show them what I do :)

P.S. The work 'Fairy' is on the flyer :)

It's Perfectly True!

These are a few works I painted over the summer based on some of the fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. I focused on the stories which had animals in them that tended to express human traits, personalities and faults through the animals.
I looked at the stories; The Ugly Duckling, The Tinderbox, The Nightingale and Its Perfectly True.
